about

Recorded at 1am on September 5, 2020.

I hiked out to Reeb's Bay in Wainfleet, Ontario at 1am to capture the sound of the ominous Lake Erie as the tide ebbed. I chose this time because human noise pollution is minimal. Honestly, it was actually kind of scary for some reason--and incredibly dark.

Because it was so dark, I wasn't able to capture a usable photo for this cover, so I took an older daytime photo I had from the precise spot I recorded this audio, and edited it to reflect a night shot. That tree limb marks the exact place I recorded this audio but I added the moon, light flares, and reflections because at this point, why not?

The sky was clear and the moon was bright. Almost no wind. Not a soul around. The beach is a mixture of water-smoothed pebbles and sand. In the distance, brightly lit ships silently crossed the treacherous lake. Here and there you can hear the sounds of stones clinking together. Since I was very still, I can only surmise it was wildlife crawling around. Perhaps turtles.

This was recorded using a Sound Devices Mixpre 3 II and a patched pair of Clippy Em 172 Omni Mics at 32 bits and 96kHz.

Enjoy this 24 bit/48kHz audio recording!
