about

This is field audio of Port Promenade in Port Colborne, Ontario, Canada at 3am on August 12, 2020 during the Perseid meteor shower. This is the Welland Canal, a part of the St. Lawrence Seaway and just south of Lock 8 and north of the shores of Lake Erie. The diesel engine you hear is the P.c Pilot Boat heading out to meet the bulk carrier called the Algoma Buffalo which began its journey in Cleveland, Ohio, and destined for Johnstown, Ontario (a 742 KM voyage). The crew of the Algoma Buffalo can be briefly heard chatting with the P.c Pilot boat. The Pilot boat leaves a wake which adds to stirring up the canal. A few local vehicles can he heard crossing the Clarence Street Bridge (Bridge 21) to the left.

This was recorded using the Sound Devices Mixpre 3 II and a matched pair of Clippy EM 172 microphones with Rycote Windshields spaced 50cm apart on a tripod in an A-B configuration.

Post work was a slight high-pass filter at 50Hz for the overwhelming subsonic frequencies of the giant diesel engines as well as some post gain.
